Replacement filters for your S&B Intake are available with cotton (Cleanable) or dry (Extendable) filter media.
Both offer similar performance characteristics, so the decision comes down to how you want to maintain your filter.

Cotton Cleanable

  • 8 layer cotton filter media with red oil.
  • Can be cleaned and re-oiled.
  • Easy to maintain using our Precision II Cleaning Kit.

Dry Extendable

  • Performance is comparable to cotton (Cleanable) filters.
  • Extend the life of the filter by blowing it out with compressed air.
  • Ideal for dry, dusty driving conditions.

FAQ'S

Q: Cleanable (cotton) Filter vs Dry Filter, What's the Difference?

A: Both filters offer similar performance characteristics, so the decision comes down to would you prefer to throw away the filter or clean it. That being said, below are some other aspects you may want to consider as well.

Vehicle Warranty
If your vehicle is under warranty, using a dry filter will keep the dealer from accusing you of not cleaning your filter properly. Regardless of which filter style you choose, S&B will step in to assist you in the unlikely event you have an issue with a dealer.

"S&B commits that our customers will not be charged for a repair due to the manufacturer denying their warranty claim because of the presence of an S&B intake kit or OE replacement filter. We warrant that using an S&B intake kit or OE filter will not result in the denial of your vehicle’s warranty."

Dusty Environment
If you operate your vehicle in conditions with lots of dry dust, we have found that customers like using a dry filter since it can be blown out with compressed air to extend the life of the filter.

Using compressed air, blow off the outside of the dry filter keeping the air nozzle moving and no closer than 6 inches to the media. This can be done while the filter is still in the vehicle. If you would like to blow it out further, remove the filter and blow it out from the inside out being careful not to concentrate the compressed air in one location in the media. While the life of our dry filters can be extended by using compressed air, ultimately, the filter must be discarded.

Our cotton/cleanable filters will protect your engine in dusty conditions as well, but they can't be blown out with compressed air as this would separate the media.

Filter Wrap
Regardless of which style of filter you utilize, we recommend that you use a filter wrap as this will keep the bugs and other big stuff out of the filter media which will extend the life of your filter and make it easier to service.

Q: Does an S&B cotton filter come pre-oiled?

A: Yes. S&B utilizes robotics to precisely apply the correct amount of oil to your filter before it ships.

Q: Are S&B Dry Filters cleanable?

A: No; however, you can extend the life of an S&B dry filter by blowing it out with compressed air. We recommend using a filter wrap to keep the bugs and big stuff off the filter media. This will make it easier to blow out and will extend the life of your filter.

How do I blow out the dry filter?

Using compressed air, blow off the outside of the filter keeping the air nozzle moving and no closer than 6 inches to the media. This can be done while the filter is still in the vehicle. If you would like to blow it out further, remove the filter and blow it out from the inside out being careful not to concentrate the compressed air in one location in the media.

Can I blow out a S&B Cotton (oiled/cleanable) Filter?

Absolutely not. If you used compressed air on our cotton filters, this will separate the media and permanently damage the filter voiding all S&B warranties.

Q: How much oil should I apply to my filter?

A: The amount of oil applied to your filter is critical, so be sure to utilize the S&B Precision Cleaning & Oiling Kit to properly service your filter. We use robotics to accurately apply the oil in our factory. You can use our Precision Cleaning & Oiling Kit to accurately apply the oil in the field.

Why does the quantity of oil matter?

The oil is the primary filtering agent on a cotton filter. Too little oil and your filter will not filter properly. Applying too much oil will hurt the airflow (add restriction) and could damage sensors.

How do I determine how much oil to use?

To determine the proper amount of oil to apply, search by the part number of your intake or search by vehicle, then click on the filter you need to oil and the correct amount will be listed under the Product Details tab.

Q: Can I use K&N Cleaner and Oil to service an S&B filter.

A: No for three (3) reasons.

  1. Our cleaning solution and oil has been designed specifically for our filters.
  2. More importantly, the S&B Precision Cleaning & Oiling Kit allows you to properly apply the correct amount of oil which is critical since the oil is the primary filtering agent. Applying the incorrect amount of oil will adversely affect the performance of your filter with respect to airflow (restriction), efficiency and capacity.
  3. S&B's Million Mile Warranty only covers filters properly maintained using S&B oil only.

Reviews

  • Are S&B Intake Kits Easy To Install?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

The installation process for an S&B Intake Kit is extremely straight forward and can usually be completed in less than 30 minutes using only standard tools.

  • Will An S&B Intake Kit Or Filter Void My Warranty?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

Installing an S&B Intake Kit or Filter will not void your vehicle's warranty as long as you follow the proper procedures found in the Vehicle, your Warranty is Safe. It is illegal for a dealership to void your warranty based solely on the fact that you have installed an aftermarket product. Your rights are protected by the Consumer Product Warranties Law, often referred to as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

  • Will An S&B Filter Or Intake Kit Improve My Fuel Economy?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

The simple answer is yes. By lowering the restriction level versus stock, the S&B Intake allows the engine to work more efficiently which will improve fuel economy. According to the Department of Energy, a dirty air filter will have an adverse affect on fuel economy. Fueleconomy.gov states that replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/maintain.shtml) The reason a clean filter improves fuel economy is because it is less restrictive than a dirty filter, so the engine works less to consume the air it needs. This S&B Intake Kit is substantially less restrictive than the OE induction system with a clean filter installed thus allowing the engine to breathe even easier which results in better fuel economy. S&B does not make a specific claim with regards to fuel economy because there are too many factors that can affect your miles per gallon.

  • How Often Should I Service (Clean) My Filter?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

The cleaning interval will depend on your driving conditions. We recommend that you inspect your filter every oil change or 6,000 miles. If debris has built up on your filter equal to the height of the wire mesh, your filter should be cleaned and oiled. Servicing your filter more frequently will result in better performance. At a minimum, the air filter should be properly serviced using a Precision Cleaning & Oiling Kit every 12,000 miles.

  • Will The Oil On The Filter Damage My Vehicle's Mass Air Sensor?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

No! In fact, many OE paper filters contain oil in order to improve the efficiency of the filter. S&B uses robotics to precisely apply the correct amount of oil at the factory and provides consumers with the Precision Cleaning & Oiling Kit to properly service the filter in the field. Oil could potentially damage the mass air sensor only if it is over-applied.

  • Do I Want An Oiled Or Dry Cold Air Intake System?

    Eric Schumann | 5/16/2019

When you think about cold air intakes, there are two main components to consider. First is air filtration. When comparing oiled filters to dry filters the oiled will always filter out more particulate than the dry filter will. The added oil allows the cotton fibers in the filter element to trap more particulate matter as the air passes through it. The downfall is that in dusty environments the oil filters tend to get dirty quicker than the dry filter will.

The second component to consider on a cold air intake is performance, or how much air flow it allows. From the tests that we have seen, there is no difference in air flow between an oiled filter or a dry filter, if they are both clean. However, as we stated before the oiled filter will catch more particulate and become dirty quicker than the dry filter will. As a filter becomes dirtier, its performance decreases due to excess particulate matter restricting the air flow. Therefore, a dry filter will provide more performance over a longer period of time than an oiled filter will.

For daily driven trucks we recommend oiled filters, unless the truck is driven in an extremely dusty environment. We feel that the extra filtration power added by the oil is worth sacrificing the 1 or 2 extra horsepower you might get from using a dry filter.
