Increase your driving confidence and towing safety with the superior retarding performance of the BD Diesel Exhaust Brake. Using BD Diesel's exclusive Variable Orifice Technology, BD's turbo-mount design bolts in place of the factory elbow between the turbo and the exhaust system, providing peak retarding power throughout the engine's rpm range—not just at high rpm like other brands. Our remote-mount models, meanwhile mount in the exhaust pipe and are perfect for modified applications that may use an aftermarket turbo.

Designed for years of reliable operation, the BD Diesel Exhaust Brakes rugged cast-iron housing incorporates BD's exclusive AlumiBronze bushing and piston ring-sealed, stainless steel butterfly shaft that has proven to stand up under the harsh, high-heat conditions of the exhaust environment. Actuated by an air cylinder (newer models) or a powerful, three-inch vacuum cylinder (earlier models), the offset butterfly valve won't stick, and has been strategically placed in the elbow so that it won't impede exhaust flow when in the open position. The BD brake incorporates a threaded port for mounting an EGTprobe, as well as a 1/4-inch stainless steel port that can be used to monitor the brake's retarding performance.

Got a modified or twin-turbo application? BD Diesels remote-mount or vacuum-actuated four-inch kits are an effective solution. Controlled by a lighted On/Off toggle switch for automatic transmissions, or stick-mounted rocker switch for manual transmissions, the BD brake communicates with the engine's electronic idle verification board for quick engagement. The durable air compressor included in later model kits can even be used for other applications- it's that tough.

Features:

  • A good way to control your speed when tackling a decline is an exhaust brake. These units work by stopping the exhaust flow, which leads to increased back pressure that slows your engine down. This will keep your speed in check without using your brakes.
  • Some exhaust brakes that will automatically adjust to your truck's highest recommended pressure. When the unit is not in use, the exhaust will flow freely without restricting exhaust, so you can keep your power up and your temperatures low.
  • Provide safe, reliable load-holding power when traveling down steep grades or slowing down with a heavy load
  • Assist brakes by retarding the diesel engine, reducing brake fade and associated expensive brake repairs
  • Variable-orifice design for superior retarding performance throughout engine RPM range

Only BD exhaust brakes develop 90% of peak retarding power by 1800 RPM and hold through 3100 RPM.

HOW IT WORKS:
Actuated by an on board air compressor and air cylinder, the BD Brake applies factory-approved exhaust backpressure that is self-regulating; once pressure reaches the factory specification, the butterfly position changes to maintain the highest pressure possible. And thanks to the large four-inch casting, exhaust flow is not restricted when the butterfly valve is in the open position. A lighted, dash-mounted toggle switch activates the brake immediately, while flipping off the switch or applying the service brakes causes the brake to release just as quickly.

Reviews

  • When I turn my exhaust brake on it stays engaged and my truck has 0 power egt go way up. I can turn truck off and restart and it goes away just curious if this is a common problem or if there is any troubleshooting I can do.

Sounds as though the butterfly in exhaust brake may be sticking. Have you cleaned and lubricated?

  • With either of these BD exhaust brakes do I need to modify anything with my automatic transmission to get it to lock up like with Banks SmartLock? Can I still use over-drive when using this? And last with either the bolt on to the exhaust flange or inline system, how does it deal with oversize exhaust pipes?

Some models have trans controllers included.  You can still use overdrive and if you have oversized exhaust you will need a different mounting group.  Give us a call if you need a specific part number for your application
