When Thoroughbred
Diesel was approached with this build our goals were a dependable
daily driver with a target horsepower of around 700hp. Our
customer had several cosmetic upgrades that he wanted to do
to the truck as well.
BDS was
brought on board to provide our 8” inch lift system.
The system was installed and with the -19 offset wheels and
37x12.50 tires we had zero rub. The added shocks of the lift
kit made the 7800lb truck ride very smooth. Even with the
8” lift the truck still retained a fairly tight turning
radius. The lift was a fairly labor intensive install, but
high quality. We found that with the AMP steps the front drop
arm bracket had to be modified to clear the steps. Also the
front Mag Hytec cover had to be modified to accept the dual
steering stabilizer.
For our fueling upgrades we used our Integrity Plus injectors
and CP3 pump, with the ATS Dual CP3 kit. We used a 125hp injector
to allow us to have room to grow in our horsepower numbers.
Our dual CP3 kit was designed to be used with Duramax CP3
pumps but we wanted to stay with the 6.7 Cummins CP3 pump.
These pumps have proved to be very reliable and we wanted
to test the 6.7 pump in a dual set up. We had to modify the
pressure line and the anchor point for our fuel pressure sensor
using this pump. Both modification were easily made with parts
received with our kit.
Our engine
only had 6000 miles on it when we received it, so we installed
the ARP studs with the head on the vehicle. The truck was
basically bone stock and the amount of heat cycles the engine
had received were minimal, so the studs were installed and
re-torqued on two different heat cycles to ensure we had a
good clamp on the head and we wouldn’t have gasket issues
with the increased boost level.
ATS was
approached for our transmission and compound turbo system.
ATS requested to use the truck in a upcoming Two Guys Garage
show shoot in Colorado, where the turbo and transmission were
be featured. Thoroughbred Diesel drove the truck to ATS after
installing all lift and fuel injection components and ATS
installed the transmission and compound turbo setup, as well
as featured the install and product on the show. The compound
turbo set up was spot on with regards to drive pressure and
our fueling. The truck hardly smoked at all when called on.
The transmission was very crisp smooth shifting and the ATS
co pilot increased the line pressure depending on the boost
level of the truck.
This
truck made 711 horsepower on ATS’s in house mustang
dyno, drove excellent, and got almost 15 miles to the gallon
while driving. It 65psi boost capable, and with the Snow water
methanol kit the EGT’s remained low while driving.
Thank
you to our visitors for your support of Thoroughbred Diesel.
