It's all in the FUEL - Literally...

Contaminants such as rust, dirt, scale and water can damage fuel injectors, pumps, and rust fuel system components resulting in costly repairs.

Ultra-low sulfur fuel Pros and Cons

Pros  (The marketing they use to sell it to us)

  • Reduction in smoke can be up to 60%
  • Sulfur dioxide emissions are cut by 90%
  • 80% reduction in a range of other toxic chemicals (i.e. aromatic hydrocarbons)
  • 20% reduction in particulate matter
  • Less exhaust odor
  • Waste oil is decreased
Cons (What they don't tell us)
  • Has always had a propensity to absorb water!
  • Contaminates (algae, rust, scaling from storage tanks) are common day concern.
While it has always been a good idea to remove water in the fuel system to extend the life of diesel injection parts , negligence can lead to catastrophic failure.

The ultra-low sulfur fuel available to us now, has always had a propensity to absorb water.  The OEM filter simply doesn't remove water or particles in a sufficient enough quantity to completely protect the system.  The other thing we have discovered is once the "water in fuel" light (WIF) comes on, there is already water passing and damage has already occurred.

How the DIESELSITE Fuel Filter/Water Separator Works

There is a separator cone in the bowl of the filter that removes water and all large particles. Removing the larger particles in this manner greatly extends the life of the filter element.  The fuel then travels into the upper section through a 2 micron particle separator.  At this point, you have very clean, water free fuel traveling through your system.  With a quick peek under the truck you can view the bowl for water and dirt.  The water is removed by opening the petcock.  As always we use the Dahl brand replacement elements.  Dahl perfected this concept and it is still the best.  Although we have always used Dahl in our fuel systems, we purchased and tested different brands before making this final decision to stick with this filter.

How difficult is it to install?
This kit is one of our more easily installed kits.  Expect a 30-45 minute install time based on mechanical ability.

How often do I change filters?
Typical filter changes would be 10-15k miles, however, for your convenience, we have a filter minder installed so you can monitor the condition of the filter. When the filter minder says "service filter", simply unscrew the bowl, clean parts, and change filter. The replacement filter comes with a new o-ring to reseal the bowl.

How durable is the "glass" bowl?
The plastic is a very tough polycarbonate. It is made for road debris and heavy Duty use on trucks. If you were going to "off-road" with the truck where logs might hit the filter, then a skid plate might be a good option to protect the filter just as you would want to protect anything else under the truck. But, road trucks need not worry about road debris, gravel, etc.

Is there a heater option?
We are working on this option that will be an add-on in the future.

How do I tell if there is water in it?
The fuel will float on water, so water will collect in the bottom of the bowl. You will see a distinct separation line between the water and fuel. Simply drain the bowl until you see the water empty. Many times, much of the large debris laying in the bottom of the bowl will also drain out as well. If the bowl has large amounts of debris in it, and the filter is not plugged, you can take the bowl off and clean and re-install without changing the filter.

Why do we need quick connects and not just cut and splice the OEM fuel lines ?
Individual components of the OEM fuel lines are not available. If you cut them and damage them, you would have to purchase an entire new fuel rail kit from Ford. By using our quick connects, there is no risk of damage to the fuel system. The quick connects also add to the ease of installation of the system.

Will this stop algae from getting through?
Yes. Algae can be a big problem in modern day ULSD fuels because of it's propensity to absorb water. If you get bad fuel with Algae in it, you will need to run some sort of algaecide to kill the algae blooms, however, when algae is destroyed, the dead algae expands a large amount. This process of cleaning out the algae will possibly make you go through several filters before your tank is empty. Do not fill the tank with new fuel until you have completely run it down as low as possible with the algaecide in it.
